The Beginning
It was after a spiritual retreat preached by Fr.George Kuttikkal, that Mr.Baby Palakkatt got the divine inspiration to open the doors of his house to the wandering mentally challenged beggars.
Our Inspiration
The word of God given in St. Mathew 25.. "I tell you, indeed, whenever you did this for one of the least important of these brothers of mine, you did it for me.."
That was in 1997. He discussed the matter with his wife Anice and also with his two children. The response was surprisingly quite encouraging and highly supportive.
Mr. Baby, an agriculturalist, was staying in a small tiled house in an interior place. His annual income was nothing more than necessary for maintaining his small family. But he was confident and absolutely convinced that the will of God for him and his family is to dedicate his life for the service of the mentally challenged who are forsaken by the society.
He brought the first patient, Birbhai, from Kannur Railway station, bathed him, gave him food and good clothes. Thus he became the first addition to Baby’s family. Day by day the number increased.
Within a span of ten years he brought more than 250 mental patients to his house. A good number of them improved their health, cured of their illness and returned to their own houses. A few of them, though they became normal, were unwelcome to their own families and they are happily taken care of by Baby’s family.
Objective
Our objective is to have a well established home for mental patients who are left in the streets unattended and uncared for. Our vision is to have a psycho social rehabilitation centre for such abandoned people. |
